Bishop Brook's Christmas Poem 2016

With my apologies to Clement Clark Moore, the author of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, and to anyone who is an actual lover of poetry, here is my 2016 Fifth Ward Christmas composition.

-->
'Twas the night before Sunday

'Twas the night before Sunday
And where we live
Preparations began
For service to give

And Mom in her housecoat
And me in my cap
Had just settled down
For a short evening nap

When up on our roof
There arose such a din
And those cursed magpies
Were trying to get in

And sleep now departed
And worries instead
About the next Sunday
Would not leave my head

And would all the people
Remember their tasks
That they'd been assigned
That they had been asked

Would the speakers deliver
Their messages clear
Would they make the Chinook
That is one of my fears

Would the bread be provided
Or would I have to send
Brother Rowe on an errand
A commandment to bend

Will all of the teachers
Be there in their place
To teach all the children
Who they have to face

And will all the youth
Appear in the room
Or just disappear
Into closets for brooms

And will the whole building
Be clean as it should
Have the contacted people
Truly scoured it good
And what if it snows
Have the shovelers been called
And don't even start
On the roof that might fall

But then I remember
The time of the year
That brings us together
That brings us good cheer

That all of those worries
Do not mean a thing
For with His example
Some peace He will bring

For though we are different
From near and from far
We still have in common
That search for the star

That shone in the heavens
And walked on the earth
That gave us His message
That starts with His birth

That promises calm
In a world full of pain
And delivers us hope
When from sin we refrain

And so it is Christmas
That one time of year
When we focus on others
And bring them good cheer

About these glad tidings
Proclaimed from above
About His arrival
And His message of love

For with all of our worries
From that day to this
It's love that's the answer
His promise of bliss

And so to my family
That's all of you here
Merry Christmas to all
And a Happy New Year

Little things are what it's all about :)

This is such a beautiful example from Sis. D. Infanti of how little things are what bring us find the joy in the every day.  It never seems like a big deal to us, but quite often, it is tender and significant to the recipient.

"Sis. Gander gave these vases to my Dad when he was home teaching the other day.  She told him to give them to "the girl in the yellow house."

So fun!  Liv and I cut some flowers from the pots outside this morning and she asked me to put it on the table where she was working on her puzzle. The one with the flowers is hand blown and has beautiful variations in the colouring.  You can see the other one in the second picture, up on the mantle.

Sis. Gander made my day with her generosity and I wanted to share 🌺summer🌺 and her thoughtfulness with the other sisters in the ward."

Moroni's Quest packing list

This is just in case your little Quester's list happens to be mysteriously missing - like almost every pair of socks they own :)

MORONI’S QUEST - 2016
TRUE AT ALL TIMES
GENERAL CHECKLIST
Costume:
  • All participants arrive in and stay in Moroni’s Quest costumes the entire time of Moroni’s Quest. (Well, except when you’re sleeping!)
  • Each participant will need at least 2 “Book of Mormon-style” costumes. You may be able to borrow these from people who’ve previously attended. Also check the costume area of second- hand stores and the internet for ideas)
Note that we’ll be running, leaping, sitting, and walking in these outfits. “Durable and roomy” are good things to keep in mind. If you need assistance locating or creating your costumes, please speak to your ward leaders well in advance of Moroni’s Quest. Help is available!
  • Please bring a simple scarf-type head covering to protect yourself from the sun. (NO baseball caps.) While a headband/blindfold will be provided, this simple scarf-type covering could also be used as a blindfold during other activities. (Think: bandana that can also serve as a headband/blindfold.)
  • Remember that the foothills can experience sudden changes in weather. Please prepare for this! (Think: rain, chilly nights, being outside all day, etc.)
  • Participants should wear shorts under their costumes (or leggings, or sweatpants). We’ll be sitting on the ground and very active at times. Sweatpants may be particularly helpful when it gets cooler in the evenings.
  • Good walking shoes are a must. Do not start Moroni’s Quest with a new pair of shoes! Once we reach the main site, sturdy sandals may be fine.
  • Each participant will need a satchel. It should be comfortable to wear, sturdy, and big enough to hold a copy of The Book of Mormon and a small journal (both of which will be provided), pencils, a water bottle, etc.

    Camping gear:
Review with your youth what to bring and how to properly pack it.
- warm sleeping bag ground sheet

Packing and transporting gear:
All sleeping and camping gear, along with items that are not necessary on the trail during the first day of Moroni’s Quest, are to be packed in durable bags that are well-marked with your name and ward. Regular garbage bags tend not to survive.
Participants’ personal gear will be packed in ward trailers and delivered to the ward site by the camp directors. (Tribe leaders and Moroni’s Quest committee members will be handled separately.)

DO NOT place any breakable items in your bags. (Full disclosure: They will not be handled with care.)
Hiking gear for first day:
Items you may need on the hike into our Moroni’s Quest site can be packed in a durable backpack or bag. These will be transported by tribe members on a travois and pulled along the trail. As there will be creek crossings, you may wish to bring a change in footwear (ie. sandals) for the crossings. Also, make sure you have your water bottle (preferably filled).
Ensure that all of your personal belongings are clearly labeled with your name! Unclaimed items after Moroni’s Quest can be purchased at the Bargain Barn.

Little Mermaid

Come see our ward members this week in

Community Theatre's presentation of:

The Little Mermaid

Darice & Justys Conrad - Mermaid sisters of Ariel
Luke Creed - Nemo

Erica Burt - at the piano & on stage as the chef

Karen Rowe - makeup
Amber Creed - orchestra

In a magical kingdom beneath the sea, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above.
Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney's The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages.  This fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs including "Under the Sea", "Kiss the Girl", and "Part of Your World."
Ariel, King Triton's youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above and bargains with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.

Oh it is Wonderful...

Wonder Boxes!
Keep Hot foods Hot and Cold foods Cold

·     RS homemaking night
·     April 14th at 7pm
·     at the church
·     You need to bring 3 yards of 100% cotton material per box.
·     Filler beads will be provided at $6/wonder box (that's right ... practically free!)
·     Bring a sewing machine if you can.

-->
·     The major benefit of the Wonder Box is to reduce the fuel you need to cook your meals. By simply bringing your food to boiling temperature for 3 minutes (15 minutes for beans) and then turning off the heat and quickly placing the pot in the Wonder Box. [The important point is to make sure that the food is at boiling temperature throughout, so large pieces of meat may need to be cubed or make sure you give it time to heat thoroughly]. The heat already in your food, combined with the insulation of the Wonder Box, will allow your meal to keep cooking “at safe cooking temperatures” for hours. Remember, the less space there is around the pot, the less heat will be lost.

-->
·     What kind of meals can you cook in a Wonder Box? Most meals that you would cook in a Crock Pot. Meals that simmer in liquid. Rice, Chili, Stews, Soups, etc…  Your food should be entirely covered with liquid, so if you are cooking a whole chicken or a roast, make sure the food is completely covered. With a little creativity, even other foods can be cooked in the Wonder Box. For example, a few whole potatoes in an oven cooking bag placed in a pot of water brought to a boil, will cook without being water logged. The Wonder Box is a slow cooker, Rice will take about an hour, a whole chicken in 3-4 hours. Tip: cook your breakfast and lunch at the same time using the same coals. By Lunch time, your meal will be ready. You can’t burn food in a Wonder Box. As long as your food stays over 160º F, Your food can cook all day. One source recommended not using your Wonder Box while it is sitting on metal as it may some of the heat through the bottom.

·     The Wonder Box can be washed using hot water and soap and dried on a clothes line.

“Miraculously, the stumbling blocks that we overcome often place us on higher ground than where we started. If we think of each successive stumbling block as part of the staircase of our eternal progression every time we fall over a block and then pick ourselves up, we climb higher toward our Savior.  His Atonement buoys us up as we truly repent and seek to overcome our sins.  His succoring will help us endure sorrow, sickness, and painful experiences in life.”
