Cardboard boat races
We had two girls in our ward compete in the cardboard boat race at the University of Lethbridge - Alexandria E. and Abby C. The girls had 1.5 hours to build the boat they had previously designed. Then one girl has to race it across the pool (Alexandria) and the other 3 girls had to sit and float in the boat for an entire minute.
FYI: Phase 1 of Plastics Ban
Phase 1 of Canada's single-use plastics ban comes into effect this month. These are the products on the list

Canada's ban on single-use plastics, starting with the manufacture and import for sale of a number of products, comes into effect later this month.
The prohibition on several categories of plastics will begin Dec. 20, affecting a range of products from checkout bags and cutlery to takeout containers and stir sticks. A ban on the sale of these products will start in December 2023.
The federal government had initially planned to start the ban by the end of 2021 but delayed it to 2022. The regulations were published in June.
The move is part of an effort by the federal government to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030, citing the impact that plastics have had on the environment through pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
Here are the products that will be subject to Canada's single-use plastics ban starting Dec. 20:
CHECKOUT BAGS
Checkout bags made entirely or in part from plastic and used to carry purchased goods from a business will be subject to the Dec. 20 ban on manufacture and import for sale.
The ban also includes fabric bags that cannot meet a stress test, meaning they can't break or tear if carrying 10 kilograms over a distance of 53 metres, 100 times, or when washed.
CUTLERY
The ban on cutlery includes single-use plastic knives, forks, spoons, sporks and chopsticks that contain either polystyrene or polyethylene, or that change their physical properties when run through a household dishwasher 100 times.
TAKEOUT CONTAINERS
The prohibition includes clamshell containers, lidded containers, boxes, cups, plates and bowls made entirely or in part from plastic and designed for serving or transporting ready-to-eat food or beverages.
These products will be subject to the ban if they contain: expanded or extruded polystyrene foam, the latter commonly referred to as Styrofoam; polyvinyl chloride, often used in salad containers; carbon black or black plastic food containers that usually come with a transparent lid; or oxo-degradable plastic.
STIR STICKS
All types of plastic stir sticks, designed to mix beverages or prevent them from spilling from a lid, will be banned under the federal government's current regulations.
STRAWS
The prohibition will include straight plastic drinking straws and flexible straws that are packaged together with beverage containers, such as juice boxes and pouches.
Straws that contain polystyrene or polyethylene, or which can't be run through a dishwasher 100 times, are subject to the ban.
Single-use plastic flexible straws, not packaged with a beverage container, are excluded under certain conditions, such as to accommodate people with disabilities.
A retail store, for example, may sell a package of 20 or more single-use plastic flexible straws if a customer asks and the package is not displayed publicly. Retailers may also sell beverage containers with a flexible plastic straw for another two years.
TIMELINE
The manufacture and import for sale in Canada of the five categories of single-use plastics comes into effect on Dec. 20.
A ban on the sale of these products will begin the following year by Dec. 20, 2023, while a prohibition on the manufacture, import and sale for export of these plastics will come into effect on Dec. 20, 2025.
A prohibition on the manufacture and import for sale in Canada of ring carriers or six-pack rings, used to carry aluminum cans and plastic bottles, will begin on June 20, 2023. Their sale will be banned by June 20, 2024, while their manufacture, import and sale for export will be prohibited starting Dec. 20, 2025.

December RS Newsletter
Presidency Message
It’s Christmas! Definitely my favorite time of year, I’ve been listening to Christmas songs for a couple of weeks already. One of my favorites right now is called Instrument of Peace by the Canadian Tenors which actually comes from a Catholic prayer. It talks about giving things like love, faith, comfort, hope and forgiveness. Presents are great! A beautiful tree with nicely wrapped gifts underneath it is such a wonderful sight. It feels so good to receive a thoughtful present and even better to be able to give them. This season as we’re contemplating all the gifts that we’ll be buying for our loved ones, let us not forget the more important gifts of love and service that we can give to all of those around us. President Hugh B. Brown said that the Spirit of Christmas illuminates the picture window of the soul, and we look out upon the world’s busy life and become more interested in people than in things. To catch the real meaning of the Spirit of Christmas, we need only drop the last syllable, and it becomes the Spirit of Christ. Merry Christmas sisters! Sis. Kelsie Payne

Young Moms Institute Class
Forwarded from the Stake RS President Sis. Mackenzie:
This is Danny Bennett, the Institute Director in Lethbridge, and I wanted to let you know about an exciting opportunity for the young moms in your stake! We have a Zoom class specifically for young moms (18-30) every Thursday from 1:30-2:30pm. The topic this semester is Saints - Volume 3 (next semester will be Come Follow Me), and the teacher is Chelsea Bretzke who is a mother of 7 and an engaging teacher! We've had great feedback from those who attended the class in past semesters, and we know it can bless the young moms of your stake, so we'd love for you to pass this message on to them!
Here is the class link:
This is a powerful opportunity for young moms to connect with each other in a spirit of unity and faith. We've had women join from all over the world, so if you have children or others you know outside your stake who you think could benefit, feel free to invite them as well!

News Release of President Nelson's "visit" to Alberta and BC
The Prophet Speaks to Latter-day Saints of Western Canada
President Nelson shares six ideas to become better disciples of Jesus Christ
On Sunday, October 16, 2022, President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spoke at a devotional for Church members and their friends in Canada’s westernmost provinces of British Columbia and Alberta.
Broadcast from Church headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, President Nelson was accompanied by his wife, Wendy Watson Nelson, and by Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and his wife, Ruth Renlund.

Sister Nelson spoke about growing up in southern Alberta and how she appreciated her Canadian roots. She also spoke of some truths she has learned since being married to President Nelson for over 16 years: “I know more than ever that what President Nelson says is what the Lord [Jesus Christ] would have him say. President Nelson is the Lord’s prophet: chosen, prepared and instructed by Him.”
President Nelson called Canada “a seedbed of faithful Saints from the earliest days of the Restoration.”
He told the many Saints watching the broadcast in chapels and online throughout Alberta and British Columbia that we all have a divine birthright. “As sons and daughters of God,” he said, “we are endowed with a divine, royal birthright. We have the potential of inheriting all the Father has.”
President Nelson offered six steps to help one progress from being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to becoming a true disciple of Jesus Christ.
First, he advised those listening to increase their capacity to receive revelation.
Second, President Nelson counselled the Saints to fill their lives with truth. He also taught that people need to be more discerning about how and where they look for truth.
The third step is to refuse to let opposition to truth weaken one’s testimony. President Nelson said opposition can come in challenging ways.
Fourth, he encouraged the members to serve and worship in the temples of the Lord Jesus Christ. With 169 operating temples and 131 more in design or under construction, President Nelson said, “We are promised that when we emerge from the temple, we are endowed with the Lord’s power!”
The fifth step to becoming a true disciple of Jesus Christ, President Nelson told the members, is to realize “how vital [they] are to the gathering of Israel.”
The sixth and final step is to expect joy. President Nelson said, “True joy comes by living in harmony with the teachings of Jesus Christ.”
The Nelsons and Renlunds, accompanied by the area presidents over Alberta and British Columbia and their wives, had planned to personally attend the devotional in Lethbridge, Alberta. Instead, because of unexpected transportation issues, they broadcast their talks from Salt Lake City.
Area Seventy David C. Stewart said, “Our hearts broke when we found out that there were problems that prevented President and Sister Nelson and the Renlunds from coming to Canada. But it actually turned out really well. Instead of it being a ticketed event, it became an event that anyone could attend.”
The distance, however, did not stop the Nelsons’ messages from being felt. Fourteen-year-old Zachary Wolff of Cranbrook, British Columbia, said, “When I was called spiritual royalty, I felt uplifted and important.”
In Grande Prairie, Alberta, Jennifer Broadhead watched with her family. “One of the messages I took from President Nelson’s comments was that despite our challenges, we can still feel joy when we live in harmony with the gospel. When the road gets rough, as we know it will, I find comfort in knowing that joy comes from following Jesus Christ.
John Strachan of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, said, “I really enjoyed watching the devotional of President Nelson. The talks felt more personal, as if they were in my home. It felt as though the talks were directed to me.”
Eighteen-year-old Reese Walters of Stirling, Alberta, is getting ready to serve a mission in Guatemala. He said, “As I pondered the words which were shared today, I was impressed to live my life in a way that’s more receptive to the Spirit and to receiving personal revelation, to get off my phone so that I can always be on call with the Lord.”
Sixteen-year-old Luca McMullin of Edmonton, Alberta, said, “The Prophet’s invitation to seek truth through applying a gospel lens to my life was very meaningful. I am grateful for President Nelson’s inspired, specific revelation for the Saints in Alberta and British Colombia.”
