Letter from Bishop Johnson - September 28th

Good evening members of the 5th Ward,

I hope this email finds you well and feeling blessed as we prepare to listen to General Conference this coming weekend. As I have prepared to hear the messages from our Prophet and other Special Witnesses of Jesus Christ, I have been reminded of a message I heard in a zone conference on my mission years ago. We had the chance to be taught by Joseph Fielding McConkie (son of Bruce R. McConkie) who was a professor of ancienct scripture at BYU. One thing that I've always remembered from his talk that day was the declaration that one of the foundational differences of the gospel of Jesus Christ that sets it apart from other denominations is that we believe that we have a God who speaks today. This wasn't necessarily new to me. But, for some reason the phrase "God who speaks today" really stood in my mind that day. What a blessing it is to have a prophet on the earth who is the mouthpiece for our Father in Heaven and his son Jesus Christ who leads this church. This is reiterated in the ninth Article of Faith which states "We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God." God speaks to us today through his prophet and apostles, but also through the Holy Ghost. They will continue to reveal many great and important things. We are also entitled to personal revelation. What a blessing it is to have the ability to pray to our Heavenly Father for a confirmation of gospel truths. One of the first challenges that missionaries extend is to pray to know if the message they have shared is true. What a simple, but foundational process it is for discovering truths. I am excited for the opportunity to listen to many gospel truths this weekend, and to pray to have the spirit confirm those truths in my heart. I invite you to take the time to do the same. I know that if you do, the spirit will teach you the truths that you need to know. I share this testimony with you in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

With Love,

Bishop Johnson

p.s. If you have not made arrangements to be able to watch general conference online in your homes, please reach out to your ministers for assistance. Also, ministers, please reach out to those to whom you minister and assist them if needed in watching general conference this weekend.

Happy 98th President Nelson

Russell M. Nelson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is celebrating his 98th birthday today in Salt Lake City, Utah, Friday, September 9, 2022. On April 14, 2022, he became the oldest president in Church history.

Reflecting on the service and life of President Nelson, President Dallin H. Oaks, First Counselor in the First Presidency, said, “He is an inspired and wise leader and the gentlest and sweetest person you could ever hope to associate with.”

President Henry B. Eyring, Second Counselor, expressed his thoughts about President Nelson’s role as the Lord’s prophet. “Every time we walk out of the office, President Oaks and I say, ‘It happened again.’ You’ll just see revelation come. You’ll see him ask for counsel, and then the decision will come and everybody in the room knows it is right and from God. He just quietly says, ‘I think this is what the Lord would want us to do.’ It’s just time after time.”

Choir scoop :)

To: All of the amazing singers in the ward,

I am so excited to start a new season of choir!  Here are the details:

The start date will be September 11th.  That's next Sunday!!  Yeah!!  We will meet in the Relief Society room directly after church.  So our time frame will be as close to 2:00 for a start time, and we will be done by 3:00.

I plan to run choir each Sunday after church, but we will take breaks on holidays and long weekends.

This fall we will focus on the hymns and Christmas songs.

I know that as we sing within our practices and for our ward, we are blessed. That the spirit speaks through song and that we can truly touch the lives of others and our own.

I cannot run a choir by myself, I need the support of each and every one of you, any family members you can bring with you and any other ward members that you would like to invite and pass this message on to.

Thank you for your support, your love of Christ and your willingness to help sing praises unto Him.

Love,
Sister Rowe

“I wonder sometimes if we realize the importance of music. I wonder if we know that the Lord himself is concerned about it. He has given us the information that the song of praise is a prayer unto him. . . . It [is] our privilege, yea, our blessing, to sing and . . . our songs should be sung in righteousness.”
-- President George Albert Smith, Church News, Feb. 16, 1946, 6

Stake RS Fireside September 11th

 The clear version 😀

Divinity at BYU Jerusalem

Divinity is spending the next 4 months at BYU Jerusalem.  She is doing video blogs and her mom is going to share them with us :). I will post them here as I get them.

I always thought people grew up the same as I did - even though I knew they didn't - but until I actually see, hear, or experience something different - it just doesn't register.  Thanks Divinity for letting us feel a bit of what you are living in over there.  Lots of love!
