Relief Society Meeting Changes: The Scoop for 2018

Ok - so the synopsis before the technically referenced version:
1st Sunday - Still directed by RS Presidency but is more a discussion (council meeting) than a lesson.
2nd and 3rd Sunday - Still directed by a teacher, but instead of us having a manual for the year, lessons will be from conference talks.
4th Sunday - Still directed by a teacher.  Topic for now is “The Sabbath Day”.
5th Sunday - Same as what we’ve had - Bishop’s message.

In these latter days, God has restored the priesthood and organized priesthood quorums and the Relief Society to help accomplish His work (see Moses 1:39). So each Sunday when we gather in Melchizedek Priesthood and Relief Society meetings, we gather to discuss and plan how we will accomplish His work. That is why these meetings need to be more than classes. They are also opportunities to counsel about the work of salvation, learn together from the teachings of Church leaders about that work, and organize to accomplish it. These changes to our Sunday meetings will help us fulfill these purposes.

First Sunday - Lesson time (a council meeting) directed by RS Presidency - Counsel together about local responsibilities, opportunities, and challenges and make plans to act.

Second and Third Sundays - Lesson time directed by a teacher - Study recent general conference messages chosen by presidency or group leaders or, on occasion, by the bishop or stake president.

Fourth Sunday - Lesson time directed by a teacher - Relief Societies discuss a topic selected by the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. These topics will be updated with every general conference. The topic until the next general conference will be The Sabbath Day.

Fifth Sunday - Addresses a topic chosen by the bishopric.

New Directive for Visiting Teaching

When we pray for inspiration to know how to serve her and help her strengthen her faith, “the angels cannot be restrained from being [our] associates.” - Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith (2007), 454.

On the right sidebar visiting teaching gadget (yes, the box on the right hand side with the picture of the woman and the Savior), the visiting teaching picture will now link you to the NEW visiting teaching PRINCIPLE for the month.
In 2018, the Relief Society will experience a big change for the Visiting Teaching program.  Instead of taking a Visiting Teaching “message” to the sisters for whom you are responsible, the monthly message [principle] will help you to learn to “minister” to each other in a more personal way.

A Visiting Teaching principle will provide ideas to help sisters minister more effectively, learn to really care for and strengthen each sister.  The church handbook says ‘visiting teachers sincerely come to know and love each sister, help her strengthen her faith and give service, seek inspiration to know how to respond to the spiritual and temporal needs of each sister they are assigned to visit.’

The hope of the new changes are to help Visiting Teachers figure out what their sisters personally need….and then, “Do what she needs” !!  Methods to find out what they need include: phone calls, listening with love, letters, email or other means.

Visiting teaching is genuine and caring compassionate service, helping the Bishop and RS president to be aware of the needs of the sisters in their wards.  “Do what she needs”  could include an hour spent listening, a text at the right time, a walk, a seat saved at church, pulling some weeds to help….we look to their NEEDS.

We should look for messages to share, that cater to the needs of the women that we visit.  Messages can be quotes from the First Presidency, or something from the scriptures or something that your sister has an interest in…..what does she NEED?

Lastly, making personal connections and listening with an attitude of love is the essence of visiting teaching. “Modern technology and time honored face to face visits help us do it anytime, anywhere, and in many ways.  That is ministering as Jesus did.
